5 ways to make a large sloping garden more usable

A large sloping garden can be one of the strongest features of a home, especially when it offers long views, mature planting or a natural connection to the surrounding landscape. The challenge is making it feel as good to use as it looks from the house.

The most successful sloping gardens are not usually flattened completely. Instead, the design creates level space where comfort matters most, while using the gradient to shape planting, privacy, movement, shade and views. This is particularly important for larger gardens, country properties and homes where the level changes are part of the character of the space.

In Surrey, the North Downs and Greensand Ridge shape much of the local landscape, so hillside settings and sloping plots are common in many of the larger gardens that we work with. Standard flat-garden ideas do not always work when terraces, retaining walls, drainage, access and structural requirements all influence the design.

Survey the levels before changing the layout

Our first step is to understand exactly how the garden sits against the house, including thresholds, access points, existing terraces, walls, trees, slopes and fixed structures. On a sloping site, even a small change in level can affect how comfortable the garden feels and how practical it is to build.

This is why our projects begin with a topographical level survey and a clear understanding of how the client wants to use the garden. The survey helps show where the site can be reshaped, where existing levels need to be respected and where structural work may be required.

In our Farnham multi-level garden, an existing outdoor swimming pool had to be removed after a new indoor pool extension had been built. This created very specific level changes between the new extension, the existing terrace and the rest of the garden. The design could not simply impose a new layout on the space. It had to respond carefully to the structure already in place, the views from inside the house and the way the garden would be used day to day.

Create level areas where comfort matters most

The most important areas to level are the spaces where people sit, dine, cook, entertain or move between key parts of the garden. These are the areas where even a slight gradient can make the garden feel less comfortable.

Dining terraces, outdoor kitchens, swimming pool surrounds, sunbathing areas and main seating spaces all need to feel stable and practical. Furniture should sit properly, chairs should not feel unbalanced and guests should be able to move between the main areas without the layout feeling tiring or awkward.

Other parts of the garden can work with the gradient. Planting banks, meadow-style areas, wildlife planting, water features and visual focal points can all sit naturally within the slope. In many large gardens, keeping some of the gradient helps the finished space feel more settled, more interesting and less over-engineered.

The design decision is not simply where to remove the slope. It is where level space will genuinely improve how the garden is used.

Use terraces to give each level a clear purpose

The best terraces are planned around how the garden will be used, not simply where the slope allows a platform to be created. Too many separate terraces can make the garden feel broken up, while too few can leave large areas difficult to enjoy.

A dining terrace close to the house may need a strong connection to the kitchen or living space. A lower seating area might feel more private, but it still needs to be easy to reach. A pool terrace, roof garden or viewing point should feel deliberate, not like a leftover space created by the level change.

This is where the terracing strategy becomes important. Each level should have a purpose, but the garden still needs to feel connected as one complete space. Steps, landings, planting, retaining walls and sightlines all help guide movement through the site, so the journey between levels feels natural rather than disjointed.

In the Farnham project, the brief was for a “wow” garden that also worked as a practical entertaining space. The design used bold, distinct areas that responded to views from inside the house, while the steep changes in level created an amphitheatre effect. This allowed the planting to become a focal point from the lower terrace, rather than simply sitting around the edges of the garden.

Handled well, terraces do more than make a slope usable. They create different moments within the garden and give each area its own atmosphere.

Use the slope to improve privacy, views and shade

Different levels can create different levels of exposure, privacy and enclosure within the same garden. A raised terrace may open up wider views across the garden or surrounding landscape, while a lower level can feel more sheltered, private and protected.

The direction of the slope makes a big difference. If the garden slopes down from the house, a lower terrace may be naturally screened by landform or planting. If the garden slopes up, the design may need to manage overlooking, views back towards the house and the sense of enclosure around seating or entertaining areas.

Shade is also becoming a more practical part of garden planning as UK summers become warmer. On a sloping site, a sheltered lower level, planted bank or carefully positioned tree canopy can offer a more comfortable place to sit during hotter weather. This can be especially valuable in gardens used by children, grandchildren, guests or older relatives.

The key is to protect the spaces where people spend time without losing the qualities that make the slope appealing. Planting, walls and level changes should create comfort and privacy while still preserving light, views and openness.

Plan retaining walls, steps and access early

Retaining walls, steps and access routes shape how much of a sloping garden can actually be used. They also affect construction, drainage, planting opportunities and the final appearance of the garden, so they should be considered early in the design process.

Heavy retaining walls can take up space and make a garden feel over-built if the level changes are handled too bluntly. More considered structural solutions can create definition while leaving room for planting, terraces and movement.

In the Farnham garden, structural steel Corten walls were used because their strength and slimmer profile helped maximise space across the site. Although the steel was a higher-spec material, it reduced the need for more extensive concrete and blockwork, helping to balance the overall construction approach. A structural engineer was also involved for the steel walls and roof garden loading, which was essential given the technical nature of the site.

Steps need the same level of thought. They should feel natural to use, safe after dark and appropriate to the level of footfall. Wider steps, landings, lighting and carefully placed planting can make movement through the garden feel calm rather than tiring.

Construction access is also important on a large sloping site. Machinery, materials, spoil removal and sequencing all need to be planned before work begins, especially where access is limited or where existing features need to be protected. A strong design on paper still needs a realistic build plan behind it.

How important is drainage in a sloping garden?

Drainage is one of the most important technical considerations in a sloping garden because water will naturally move downhill. Terraces, retaining walls, paths, lawns and planting areas all need to be designed with run-off in mind.

This does not mean every sloping garden will flood, but water still needs to be directed safely. Without careful planning, it can collect behind retaining walls, move across steps or paths, sit at the bottom of the garden, or leave some areas too dry while others become too wet.

The right solution depends on the site. It may involve drainage channels, soakaways, permeable surfaces, land drains, water harvesting, irrigation adjustments or planting suited to different moisture levels. Pumps can be useful in some cases, particularly where water needs to be moved from a lower point, but they add maintenance and should not be treated as the default solution.
