STEPS FOR LANDSCAPE GARDEN DESIGN

STEPS

The ideal garden leads you through different areas and levels, presenting you with new aspects, destinations, feature planting and more. Creating that type of garden successfully means your design team needs to think carefully about integrating steps into the design.

The number, style and materials used for the steps in your garden will depend on the type of garden you want to create. If your land is already sloping or multi-level, building steps into your garden can ensure easy, safe access, while also being a feature in themselves. If your garden is flat, we can easily look at building areas that are slightly above or below the main topography, using wide steps to create a sense of different levels.

MATERIALS FOR GARDEN STEPS

One of the great things about adding steps to your garden is the opportunity it gives you to add materials to your garden design. Depending on the style and type of garden you want to create, you can use traditional stone or brick, or timber which has been designed for safe use. In a contemporary garden, you might want to use steel steps or even composite materials, and in a garden design with a more industrial flavour, open metal stairs, for example.

You’ll also want to think about handrails, which can be in complementary materials – or use a retaining wall or other hard landscaping feature to provide the side areas for your steps.

And don’t forget that your steps don’t have to be a set width or be in a straight line – there’s something very satisfying about taking curved steps to an area of your garden or building wide steps into a lawned area to create a terraced feel. We build all our steps to appropriate building standards, and can add lighting and planting to help them integrate completely into your overall garden design.
