Our brief for this landscaping project in Godalming was ‘reimagine the existing parterre garden into a more functional and attractive space that is brighter and more inviting that links with the wider garden and landscape’. The aim was to retain the formal character of the original layout while introducing a softer and more practical garden design better suited to modern living.

This Grade II listed property dates back to the 15th century and was undergoing significant extension and renovation works to one section of the house adjacent to the existing parterre garden. As the internal layout of the property evolved, it became important for the outdoor space to reflect these changes and provide a more seamless relationship between the house and garden.

A key part of the landscaping design focused on introducing natural materials that complemented the historic architecture of the property while softening the appearance of the formal garden. Carefully selected paving, planting, and landscaping materials were chosen to remain sympathetic to the character of the listed building and surrounding Surrey countryside.

The updated garden design creates a more balanced and welcoming outdoor environment, combining traditional landscaping principles with practical outdoor living spaces that enhance the usability, atmosphere, and long-term enjoyment of the garden.

Our client didn’t want to see more red brick so our choice of clay pavers and natural sandstone allowed us to be creative with the space whilst reusing all the existed bricks for the new low retaining walls and steps.

Creating a wildflower meadow and linking it with more substantial planting borders closer to the house assists in softening the terrace.
